ASUU to Resume Pressure on Government as New President Piwuna Takes office
Professor Chris Piwuna has officially taken over as the new ASUU president from Professor Emmanuel Osodeke and is expected to renew pressure on the federal government to address long-standing demands such as university autonomy, unpaid academic allowances, better salaries, and increased funding.
Despite government claims of meeting 80% of ASUU’s demands, the union maintains that no major issues have been permanently resolved.
The last ASUU strike in 2022 lasted eight months due to these unresolved grievances, and while other university unions resumed work, ASUU’s refusal led to legal battles.
Recent moves by President Tinubu to appoint governing councils aim to ease tensions, but with Piwuna now leading, many are watching closely to see if his administration will bring fresh energy to negotiations or if more strikes loom ahead.
