NORTH-EASTERN UNIVERSITY GOMBE SECURES FULL NUC ACCREDITATION FOR 12 NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

North-Eastern University, Gombe (formerly Pen Resource University), has announced a significant academic milestone following the successful conclusion of the 2024 National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation exercise. Established in 2022, the institution presented twelve academic programmes for its first accreditation cycle. All twelve programmes received full accreditation from the NUC, reflecting the university’s strong commitment to academic quality, institutional development, and national relevance.

The university achieved an impressive overall average score of 91.4 percent, with several programmes recording exceptional performance. The B.Sc. Business Administration programme scored 99.1 percent, followed by B.Sc. International Relations with 95.4 percent and B.Sc. Accounting at 94.8 percent. Other scores include B.Sc. Architecture (94.5%), Computer Science (92.7%), Information Technology (92.7%), Public Administration (89.8%), Software Engineering (89.3%), Economics & Development Studies (88.8%), Cyber Security (88.4%), Industrial Chemistry (87.0%), and Mass Communication (84.5%).

Beyond the NUC exercise, the university has also received positive recognition from other professional regulatory bodies. In January 2025, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) commended the institution’s nursing programme following a regulatory visit. This led to an increase in the admission quota for the B.NSc. Nursing Science programme. Similarly, the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) conducted a resource verification visit in March 2025 and gave favorable feedback regarding the institution’s architecture programme.

Looking ahead, the university has scheduled eight additional programmes for accreditation in November and December 2025. These include B.Sc. Public Health, B.Sc. Building, B.Sc. Quantity Surveying, B.Sc. Environmental Management and Toxicology, B.Sc. Petroleum Chemistry, B.Sc. Data Science, LL.B. Common Law, and LL.B. Common and Islamic Law. Another set of programmes—B.MLS. Medical Laboratory Science, B.NSc. Nursing Science, and B.Sc. Procurement Management—will be due for accreditation in 2026.

In addition, the university has received NUC approval to run several new programmes, including B.Sc. Political Science, B.Sc. Biotechnology, B.Sc. Microbiology, and B.Sc. Urban & Regional Planning. Admissions into all approved programmes are currently open for the 2025/2026 academic session.

In a statement signed by Dr. Sani Isyaka, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Director of the Directorate of Academic Planning & Quality Assurance, the university expressed gratitude to the Chancellor, HRH Alhaji (Dr) Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III CFR, Emir of Gombe, the Pro-Chancellor and Founder, Dr. Sani Jauro, members of the Board of Trustees, Governing Council, the NUC, professional bodies, academic and non-academic staff, students, and other stakeholders for their support and dedication.

North-Eastern University reiterated its commitment to advancing quality education and becoming a hub for transformative learning in Nigeria and beyond.
