2025 WASSCE English Paper not Cancelled, Says Waec Amid Leak Fallout
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has debunked claims that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) English Language paper has been cancelled, amid mounting backlash over examination leaks and logistical failures.
A widely circulated fake press release, dated May 30, 2025, falsely claimed that the May 28 English Language paper had been invalidated and would be rescheduled.
The misinformation, which spread rapidly on social media, prompted confusion and anxiety among students, parents, and schools.
In a swift response on Tuesday, WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, issued an official statement discrediting the document and reaffirming the validity of the exam.
The statement partly reads, “The management of the West African Examinations Council would like to state that the press release being circulated did not emanate from the council. The said examination has not been cancelled.
“The council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the council to disrepute, to cause confusion and panic for candidates who sat the examination.
WAEC also warned the public to disregard unverified information not released via its official communication channels.
